Experience
I was born in Cuba, but spent my childhood in northern Italy. At the age of fifteen, my family and I moved to the United States. High school proved to be challenging at first- I did not speak a word of English, but never gave up. After taking sixteen AP classes, I graduated in the top 5% of my graduating class! I was admitted to Emory University, where I successfully completed the following coursework (not all courses are displayed!): - BIOL141, BIOL141L, BIOL142, BIOL142L (1 Year General Biology Sequence) - CHEM141, CHEM141L, CHEM142, CHEM142L (1 Year General Chemistry Sequence) - CHEM221, CHEM221L, CHEM222, CHEM222L (1 Year Organic Chemistry Sequence) - CHEM301 (Biochemistry) - PHYS141, PHYS141L, PHYS142, PHYS142L (1 Year Physics Sequence) -QTM100 (Intro to Statistics) - MATH111, MATH112 (1 Year Calculus Sequence) - NBB201 (Animal Behavior) - NBB301 (Neurobiology) - NBB302 (Systems Neuroscience) - NBB401 (Neuroscience Writing Seminar) - PSYCH309 (Brain and Language) - NBB465 (Techniques in Neuroscience) -NEU499 (Two Semesters of Undergraduate Research for Credit) + 36 semester hours in political science coursework related to my international studies major (e.g. Western European Politics, Eastern European Politics, The German Political System, Comparative Politics, Political Science Methods, Intermediate Comparative Politics, Dictatorships and Repression, International Relations, etc.) I developed a fervent passion for neuroscience after researching in the labs of world-renowned neurotoxicologist Dr. Gary Miller (at Emory) and of Nobel Laureate Richard Axel (won the 2004 Medicine and Physiology prize for discovering a family of genes that encode thousands of olfactory receptors- all this at Columbia University). I later sought admission to graduate programs and successfully enrolled at Princeton University (~5% acceptance rate for my program!) to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience. Here, I have completed: - NEU501a (Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience) - NEU501b (Practical in Techniques in Neurobiology) - NEU502a (Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience) - NEU502b (Practical in fMRI, PET, and EEG Methodologies) - NEU314 (Computational Neuroscience) - NEU560 (Statistical Modeling of Neural Data) Now, as a second year PhD student, I serve as a preceptor for Introduction to Neuroscience (NEU201) and Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience (NEU202). In my role, I develop and apply active-learning activities to solidify the students' understanding of the material discussed in lecture. By doing this, my goal is to highlight that students may truly grasp even the most complex topics.
