Private tutor in Princeton, NJ
Education
Senior Astrophysical Science Major at Princeton. Minor/Certificate: Applications of Computing Other interests: European and Asian history, creative writing, essay writing
Experience
SAT (M/R/W): 780/770/760 SAT Subject Tests: Math II - 790 Physics - 800 World History - 790 AP Exams: Physics B, Physics C (E&M and Mech), Calc BC, Comp. Sci. AB, World History, U.S. History - 5 In high school I tutored students in nearly every grade in Math and English at my local Kumon. I also tutored independently in Regents U.S. and World History, AP Physics B, and SAT Math. I think given the skills I've acquired in college I would now be most effective as a tutor in (a) the general SAT, (b) SAT Subject Test/AP Physics, Math, and Computer Science, and (c) essay writing help/editing and general college applications. That last bit about writing might seem odd given my major, but although my coursework has been pretty heavy on the physical sciences, writing--especially personal essays--is a strong side interest of mine that I've won some awards in during high school and college.

Hobbies
When I'm not wading through massive piles of homework, I like to read (The Lord of the Rings and Jane Eyre are two favorites, though I have a soft spot for authors like David Sedaris as well), cook (though not so much in the communal dorm kitchen), and linger over meals with my friends. Back in high school I was an avid Science Olympiad-er, Science Bowl-er, Ocean Bowl-er, and a somewhat less enthusiastic cross country runner--basically, all the activities that would make me look super cool. I'm still the same fairly quiet nerd and have a gentle and encouraging tutoring style. I've never been much of a disciplinarian, so while I am happy to (and have) worked with students at various ages and at a variety of levels of understanding of a given subject, I work best with students who bring their own determination and grit to the table (if perhaps not love of the subject). I've had to learn some pretty tough and weird subjects as an astro major (here's looking at you, quantum mech) and, in the process, what I've learned about learning is that there's no substitute for consistent practice. When I'm working with a student in-person, we'll tease out the problems with a fine tooth comb, but what really makes the improvements in understanding stick is an extra 1-2 hours of practice in between our sessions. I should probably also note that I don't have a car, so while I can walk up to a mile or so from Princeton's campus, a more common arrangement is for the parent to drop off the student at, say, Lewis Science Library for tutoring.
